Portfolio Requirements and Reviews

Ceramics, Design, Fine Arts, Illustration, Photography: Please upload 15–20 examples of what you believe are your strongest pieces. Portfolio artwork may include a variety of 2D and 3D works such as photography, painting, illustration, ceramics, sculpture, digital imaging, printmaking, and metal-smithing. Typical portfolios include several direct observational work (i.e. work drawn or painted from life, not a photograph; examples include self-portraits, figure drawings, still-lifes, landscapes, etc.). These drawings from life show us how you problem solve visually as well as how prepared you will be coming into the Foundations program.

Please upload 10-20 pages of original writing that might include, but is not limited to: poetry, fiction, essays, experimental prose, graphic novels, etc. You are encouraged to submit writing samples that demonstrate the range of your skills. Your portfolio should be an indication of your creative capacities and strengths. Regardless of genre, each piece in your writing sample should be grammatically sound and demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language.

Please ensure that your visual arts portfolio includes a minimum of 5 examples of drawing - both drawing from observation, and expressive drawing.

  • Undergraduate applicants are required to submit a digital portfolio via Slideroom
  • Students typically submit only one type of portfolio, although if you are undecided on majoring in Creative Writing versus Visual Arts, it is required to submit both portfolios in order to choose a major later.

Informal portfolio reviews

  • Students are encouraged to present their work to us at any point in time. Options for in-person reviews include: Campus visits, National Portfolio Days, high school visits, and college fairs.
