Spend the summer photographing the ruins of Ancient Greece, experience autumn in Florence, Italy, where you’ll discover artistic wonders around every corner, or shape your technique with a Ceramics trip to China. NHIA’s study abroad program is designed to expand your artistic horizons, exposing you to new skills and techniques while immersing you in a vibrant culture.
NHIA students wishing to spend a semester studying abroad will now be able to attend the Studio Arts Center International (SACI) in Florence, Italy starting in the fall of 2016. What’s more, they can take advantage of this amazing opportunity to study in Italy for a semester at no additional tuition and with no changes to their existing financial aid or scholarships. They pay only for the additional cost of international travel, room, food, visa and miscellaneous program costs. For more information about this, please contact our Registrar or visit SACI.
Photographing the Landscape, Architecture and People of Athens, Greece
May 29 - June 27, 2018
Led by Gary Samson, Professor Emeritus, Photography, NHIA
Open to participants 18 and older, no prior photographic experience required. 20 participants max.
Since 2011, Gary Samson has been sharing his passion for exploring world culture by taking students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, from illustration to graphic design, to Greece for a month-long summer abroad program. This year’s trip will explore the rich culture of Greece through the creation of a body of photographic work that includes portraits, architecture, and landscape images. Using a digital, single-lens, reflex camera, you will learn how to use both available and artificial light to create compelling photographs that examine the rich heritage and artistic significance of this world class city. As an introduction, examples of 19th and 20th century photography will be presented as well as a review of digital camera operation, photographic technique, and lens selection based on subject interpretation and lighting conditions.
Weekly field trips and critiques will help guide you through the technical and aesthetic decisions you have to make to create a cohesive body of work. The finished portfolio will include twenty-four images and a daily journal documenting you work and personal experiences. Past locations we’ve visited include the Acropolis, National Archaeological Museum, Temple of Zeus, Byzantine churches, Delphi, Rhodes, Sparta, Sounio, and an Ottoman Empire Islamic Museum.
Students form strong and lasting bonds with their peers during the trip. A robust continental breakfast at the hotel gets us started in the morning, and most weekdays are filled with an afternoon lecture, photography lesson or exploration of the streets of Athens and its ancient temples. Each day’s activities conclude with a discussion over a relaxed family style dinner at the HAU Cafe. Usually we are on our own for most meals when we are out of Athens. This year a six-day trip to the Greek Island of Rhodes is also planned as part of the learning experience.
