Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries:
FILM NIGHT CO-SPONSORED BY HARRIS CENTER FOR CONSERVATION EDUCATION AND SHARON ARTS CENTER
The Water Front, a documentary, gives a broad sense of the scope of worldwide danger as potable water is less available
PETERBOROUGH, NH --- Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries is pleased to co-sponsor a special showing of the film The Water Front with the Harris Center for Conservation Education on Tuesday, July 14th. This special showing is part of the program at the Gallery for the exhibition - WATER: Mystery & Plight. The film will be shown at 5:30 pm at the Peterborough Community Theatre (6 School St.). A reception and discussion will follow immediately at the Sharon Arts Exhibition Gallery at 30 Grove Street in Downtown Peterborough.

The movie The Water Front is a documentary about Highland Park, Michigan and what happened to its citizens when the city government decided their water plant was the city's only positive financial asset. The city council marketed the water as a commodity to solve the city's financial woes. Residents, mainly poor and black, saw soaring water bills and lost control of their own water, a basic human need. The Highland Park situation is a microcosm of many other cities, states and countries, and readily available, potable water is becoming rare.

Peterborough Community Theatre will show a synopsis of the full documentary as well as interviews with two noted experts on water issues, Maude Barlow and Vivienne Bennett. These three video pieces will give a broad sense of the scope of the worldwide water danger. The Harris Center, in keeping with its role of conservation and education, was happy to provide funding for the movie and support for the reception. It is quite possible that they will follow up with some programs in the fall and winter about the complexities of water issues.

Questions from viewers will be welcome during the discussion period. The public is invited and admission is free. The Exhibition Gallery is located at 30 Grove Street. Ample parking in Depot Square. WATER: Mystery & Plight, curated by Christine Destrempes and Susan Callihan, addresses an alarming consequence of the global water crisis with the installation 13,699 (by Destrempes) while reminding us of the beauty and contemplative value of water with photography by Mary Lang. It will be on exhibit through August 2nd. For more information on the exhibition and Sharon Arts Center, visit www.sharonarts.org. Gallery hours: T-Th: 10-5, F-S: 10-6, Sun: 11-4, closed Mondays.
