The life work of William Jurian Kaula and his wife, Lee Lufkin Kaula will be on display at the Sharon Arts Center Galleries in Peterborough, NH, July 5 - July 26. The exhibition, Two Lives: One Passion, the Life and Work of William Jurian Kaula and Lee Lufkin Kaula, offers a rare opportunity to view the collected works of two talented artists who, in 1905, were the first residents of Boston's most famous artist residences, the Fenway Studios, and who summered in New Ipswich, New Hampshire from 1916 through 1957.
The work of landscape painter, William J. Kaula known especially for his masterful clouds, and that of his wife, Lee Lufkin, known for her exquisite portraits of ladies in beautiful costume, will be on display along with sketches, notebooks, and photographs all detailing the life of these two painters who were husband and wife. William J. Kaula was a prolific painter and a keen observer of life at the turn of the nineteenth and into the first half of the twentieth centuries. His personal diaries offer an in-depth look inside the mind of an almost obsessive painter who was a master of his craft. His sketches further support his wholehearted interest in perfecting his work. The collection of paintings never before displayed together offer viewers a chance to study the detailed work of one man over his lifetime. Lee Lufkin Kaula was an expert portraitist and avid photographer who painted portraits of beautiful woman in exquisite garb. She documented the trips that she and her husband took as they traveled through parts of Europe and New England through photographs and sketches. Her paintings of woman and children are striking and should not be missed by anyone interested in the history of art during the early part of the twentieth century. To accompany the show, a 144-page full-color book entitled Two Lives: One Passion, written by art history professor Carol Scollans and complete with beautiful reproductions of the couple's paintings, sketches, and photographs, as well as excerpts from Kaula's personal diaries, will be introduced. Stunning to look at, pleasing to experience, and enlightening to read, the show and book, Two Lives: One Passion, together offer a rare chance to truly understand the lives of husband-and-wife painters who showed their appreciation and love for the world through their works of art. |
