heaven and earth by humberto ramirez

Ramirez is a multimedia artist working in painting, video and curatorial projects. His work is concerned with the exploration of difference as an importantly emerging paradigm affecting all areas of culture. His work has often critically examined the play of forces between culture and nature as well as the tensions generated between the personal and public realm. He is an artist that is interested in issues of difference as conceptualized in contemporary art and cultural theory. Humberto's work presently is concerned with social issues and the power of language in shaping our values and perceptions. Issues of difference and cultural resistance are paramount to his artistic practice.

Heaven and Earth is an overt intersection of culture and nature. A selection of paintings from his Sky series will be displayed with a selection of paintings from his Political series.

The Sky series includes a group of paintings that show both night and day. The night skies are ethereal, mysterious and clear - without interference of city light. Ramirez sublimely captures the elegance of a simple, wispy cloud or shooting star, inviting the viewer to recall a memory or to transport the viewer to a place of tranquility.

The Political series is a startling contrast to the Sky series. Using repeated patterns of natural elements such as butterflies, fish and wasps with unnatural objects such as jets, bombs and weapons on stark white canvasses, the viewer is unable to relax into the seductive cadence of composition and color because of the tension between the subject matter of the images. Ramirez challenges and provokes with this series, asking the viewer to consider the concept of difference.

Ramirez, a Brattleboro, VT resident, is an artist, curator, and writer. He has taught at a variety of educational settings ranging from inner-city schools to colleges, universities and art colonies. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Landmark College in Putney, Vermont and Core Faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. His work has been shown throughout the United States as well as in Latin America, Asia and Europe. His work is shown online and at traditional venues such as art galleries, museums and film/video festivals. For more information on the artist, visit www.humbertoramirez.net.
