ARTIST'S FORUM WITH HUMBERTO RAMIREZ, MULTI-MEDIA ARTIST FROM CHILE

PETERBOROUGH, NH --- Artist's Forum with Humberto Ramirez, Friday, October 2nd, 5-7 pm, at Sharon Arts Downtown Gallery, 30 Grove Street. Join exhibiting artist Humberto Ramirez for an interactive discussion of how painting's role and relevance has been significantly redefined by digital culture. The informal talk will feature an interactive discussion with the audience on the role of art and how it has evolved. The event is free and open to the public.

Ramirez will highlight concepts very relevant to today's practicing artists. He will speak to how painting has been affected by the diversification of artistic practices resulting from the rise of conceptualism since the early sixties. "Painting's role and relevance have been significantly redefined. This will be an exploration of how painting's new reduced profile has actually resulted in its unexpected longevity and proliferation," said Ramirez.

The discussion will also address the potential of new forms of creative production and their different forms of addressing the roles of artist and audience. All are welcome to explore these concepts in a group discussion lead by Ramirez.

Ramirez is a multi-media artist working in painting, video and curatorial projects. Digital art has been integral to Ramirez's practice of the last 15 years. His work is presently concerned with social issues and the power of language in shaping people's values and perceptions. Issues of difference and cultural resistance are paramount to his artistic practice. His work has often critically examined the play of forces between culture and nature as well as the tensions generated between the personal and public realm. He is an artist that is interested in issues of difference as conceptualized in contemporary art and cultural theory.

Ramirez, a Brattleboro, VT resident, is an artist, curator, and writer. He has taught at a variety of educational settings ranging from inner-city schools to colleges, universities and art colonies. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Landmark College in Putney, Vermont and Core Faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. His work has been shown throughout the United States as well as in Latin America, Asia and Europe. His work is shown online and at traditional venues such as art galleries, museums and film festivals. For more information on the artist, visit www.humbertoramirez.net.
